Supporting Food Sovereignty, Department of FST IPB University Holds Discussion of Young People on Food Technology

In an effort to increase knowledge and insight related to the development of food technology and food security, the Department of Food Technology, Faculty of Agricultural Technology (Fateta) IPB University held a “National Seminar on Food Technology” at the Andi Hakim Nasoetion Auditorium Building, Dramaga Campus Bogor (22/9). This activity was attended by more than one hundred participants, consisting of students from IPB University and students outside IPB University and high school students as well as several people from agencies and institutions in the field of food related.

Chairman of the Department of Food Technology, Dr. Feri Kusnandar in his remarks said that this event was a discussion forum related to developments and advances in the field of food technology to produce innovations that help the nation’s food sovereignty. According to him, IPB University has developed many technologies and innovations in the food sector until the commercialization stage.

“Hopefully university students and highschool students can see the potential of innovative ideas from speakers who are experts in their fields,” said Dr. Feri Kusnandar.

The speakers who attended were Prof. Slamet Budijanto, Professor of Food Science and Technology, Fateta IPB University. In his presentation, Prof. Slamet explained Analog Rice innovation and its development. Prof. Slamet explained his long journey with the team in creating analog rice innovation. Analog rice innovation continues to grow, until artificial analog rice is created.

“Functional analog rice is an analog rice which has a low glycemic index that is friendly for diabetics. Furthermore, there are analog rice innovations that are able to withstand increased cholesterol or antihypercholesterolemia. The addition of natural active ingredients such as sorghum and rice bran to analog rice has been investigated to be useful as an anti-chemopreventive or cancer prevention agent. We continue to develop this innovation effort. What is still our duty is related to the acceptance of analog rice flavor or flavor in the community,” he explained.

Another speaker was Dr. Bram Kusbiantoro, an alumni of IPB University who now serves as the Chief Researcher at the Indonesian Center for Rice Crops. In his presentation, Dr. Bram explained about the sovereignty and food security and the development of rice research in Indonesia. “In Indonesia, the main agricultural products such as rice become a strategic commodity so the government continues to strive to maintain the stability and sustainability of its production. Innovations to improve the quality of rice plants ranging from seeds, planting processes, to yields are a strategic part of starting food sovereignty,” explained Dr. Bram Kusbiantoro.

Also present were Manager of the Cereal Partners Division from Nestle, Lisa, S.TP, M.P who explained about cereal and its prospects in the food industry in the future. “Lifestyle patterns and dietary trends of modern society make cereal a favorite food. However, the mindset that is still dominant in Indonesian society that is not eating if you don’t eat rice needs to be improved. Because staple foods are carbohydrates and their sources vary. The development of cereal production is currently minimizing sugar, sucrose and increasing micronutrients through fortification,” said Lisa, who is also an alumni of IPB University.

The enthusiasm of the participants was very high in this activity from the beginning to the end of the event. The Chairperson of the National Seminar, Noah said that this seminar was a series of activities from the 2019 Food Fast Appropriate Competition (LCTIP). LCTIP was a competition activity for high school students of national level equivalent who competed in the field of food science and technology. “This year’s LCTIP is the 28th LCTIP. In terms of participants, high school students are very enthusiastic since the beginning of registration, selection, until the competition runs,” explained Noah. (RYS)
