The Department of Food Science and Technology was established in 1964, with the name at the beginning of its establishment being the Department of Agricultural Product Technology, under the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering and Technology. In 1981, its name changed to the Department of Food Technology and Nutrition. In 2005, its name changed back to the Department of Agricultural Science and Technology.

The Department of Food Science and Technology (ITP) has a scientific mandate in the development of food science and technology, including chemistry, microbiology, process engineering, analysis, quality and food safety. The scientific fields of the Department of ITP are grouped into four (4) divisions, namely (1) Food Chemistry; (2) Food Microbiology; (3) Food Process Engineering; and (4) Food Biochemistry. In accordance with its scientific mandate, the ITP Department manages four (4) study programs as follows:
