The Department of Food Science and Technology (ITP), Faculty of Agricultural Technology, IPB University, held an online talk show about the progress of food technology experts in the industry and the procedures to become a food technologist with experts from the food industry and ITP IPB lecturers, 4/7. The event had attended by students, lecturers, and the general public.
Galih Nugroho, IPB University Alumni who currently serves as Production Manager at PT Nutrifood Indonesia, explained the main task of a food technologist. He said food technology graduates could enter the industry as food technologists through the private sector, public sector, or third sector. “With the rapid development of the food industry in Indonesia, this sector contributes 7 percent to the national economy. That makes a career as a food technologist very promising,” he said.
Food technologists, he continued, can be involved in various areas of the food industry, from raw materials, hotels, restaurants, packaging, quality auditors to finished products. When a pandemic like this, he said, sanitation in the factory area also became important, food technologists were relied upon to overcome this.
He also told, in the research and development division, a food technologist had tasked with concocting product formulas ranging from price to quality. According to him, knowledge of nutrition and food products makes graduates of food technology can develop well in product branding. Food technology alumni can also contribute through social media content about food technology for the general public, including advertising. Besides, the public sector, such as the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM), the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) to the non-government organization (NGO) sector such as the World Bank, also requires food technologists.
Meanwhile, Dr. Dase Hunaefi, IPB University Lecturer from the ITP Department, said the food technology study program at IPB University is a deluxe choice. Starting from the quality of lecturers to the facilities is very supportive of the development of their students. The existence of international classes and wide open scholarships to student exchange programs make the study program to become one of the favorite study programs at IPB University.
He mentioned that the study program was also internationally recognized by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT). Not only through the regular path as IPB’s entrance path in general, but prospective students can also enter the Food Technology study program through the “golden ticket” through the Fast Food Science Appropriate Race organized by the Food Technology Student Association (HIMITEPA).
“Hopefully, the information conveyed through Meet the Food Technologist can provide another complete picture of the food technology study program at IPB University,” explained the Chair of the Department of ITP IPB University, Feri Kusnandar.(IAAS/YN)
